  Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (19 November 1917 – 31 October 1984) was the Prime Minister of India for three consecutive terms between 1966 and 1977, and for a further fourth term between 1980 and 1984. She was assassinated during her fourth term in office, in 1984.
  
  It is difficult to sum up a long political career in just a few words, but today she is principally remembered for leading India to victory in the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971, the first Indian nuclear test ("Smiling Buddha") which took place under her premiership in 1974, her devaluation of the Rupee to boost trade, and the green and white revolution (boosting production of crops and milk) which took place during the 1960s and 1970s and which brought and end to what had been India's chronic food shortages. Indira Gandhi's political career was not without controversy however, she declared a state of emergency, and gained the power to rule by decree, for 21 months between 1975 and 1977, and struggled with problems in the Punjab during her fourth term as Prime Minister
